Types of Police Record Checks

The estimated response time for applications is 7 - 10 business days but may fluctuate due to volume and time of year.

  1. Police Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC)

This check is restricted to applicants in a position of trust or authority relative to vulnerable persons. If your application is being used outside of Canada, we are unable to process a Police Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC). It is the police service that verifies that the position meets the requirements for a vulnerable sector check.

You can only apply for a VSC if you live in Toronto and surrounding areas (Scarborough, North York, East York, Etobicoke, Old Toronto, etc.) with a HOME postal code beginning with "M".

When applying for a VSC you do NOT need to also apply for a CRC or CRJMC for the same position, as the VSC includes both the CRC and CRJMC.

A Vulnerable Sector Check will provide the following information:
    • Criminal convictions summary or indictable from CPIC and/or local databases
    • Findings of guilt under the Youth Criminal Justice Act within the applicable disclosure period
    • Outstanding entries, such as charges and warrants, judicial orders, peace bonds, probation and prohibition orders
    • Absolute and conditional discharges
    • Charges that resulted in a finding of not criminally responsible on account of mental disorder
    • Pardoned offences authorized under the Criminal Records Act
    • Non-conviction information authorized through Exceptional Disclosure

You will only be allowed to proceed with submitting a Vulnerable Sector Check application if the agency seeking the check is a Toronto Police-approved registered Vulnerable Sector Agency and provides you with a code required to submit the application. For information on becoming a registered VS Agency with TPS, please visit the Toronto Police Service Record Checks website.

NOTE: Only YOUTH (anyone below 18 years of age) VSC applications where employment or volunteering with the vulnerable sector is with a federal, provincial or municipal government of Canada agency will be processed by the Toronto Police Service. The government agency seeking the check must be a Toronto Police-approved Vulnerable Sector Agency and provide you with a code required to proceed with the application process. Youth VSC applications for employment or volunteering with nongovernmental agencies will NOT be processed. Please visit the Toronto Police Service Record Checks website for more information and to determine what a governmental agency is before submitting your application, as any fee charged is non-refundable.
